Summer Bursary Scholarship Scheme 2023

Introduction and background

This new bursary scholarship scheme is available for undergraduate students at Universities, Institutes of Technology, Technological University and National Institutes for Higher Education. The Bursary scholarship programme will give preference to undergraduate students who will have completed at least 2 years study in a relevant discipline by the start of the programme.

Successful candidates will work with full time with the ACRES West Connacht staff in the exciting areas of agri-environment habitat assessment and ecological monitoring.

A bursary scholarship is valued at €350 per week (full time employment) and will last between 10-12 weeks. Travel expenses incurred during working hours will be paid monthly. Full training will be provided to meet the needs of the successful candidates (ecology, agri-environment and health & safety).

Bursary Description:

Habitat Assessment and Ecological Monitoring Bursary

Working full time, predominately in the field supporting the assessment and scoring of commonage farmland in the West Connacht region.

Job Description

  • The bursary will be based in the West Connacht, with regional offices in Belmullet and Westport Co. Mayo.

  • The bursary will be predominantly field based, with some office duties periodically.

  • Working knowledge of farmland habitats (grassland and peatland) and their ecology is essential.

  • Knowledge and awareness of agri-environmental schemes such as e.g. GLAS

  • Assist the team in the field and support results-based score card assessment on Commonage farmland in the West Connacht region.

  • An ideal candidate should be goal-orientated, willing to play a team role, able to work as part of a team.

  • Much of the work will be outdoors, must be physically fit / happy to work outdoors.

  • A flexible working arrangement may be needed to work into the evenings, largely weather dependent.

  • Support the project team with the targeting of, and monitoring the implementation of, actions to be completed by farmers.

  • Data entry and data preparation for upload into a new database will also be a component of the work.

  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Excel and Word.

  • Excellent communication skills and a strong attention to detail.

  • Own transport is essential for both getting to and from work, but also during work to travel between locations on a daily basis.

Salary and Employment Details

A bursary scholarship is valued at €350 per week (full time employment) and will last between 10-12 weeks. Travel expenses incurred during working hours will be paid monthly. Full training will be provided to meet the needs of the successful candidates (ecology, agri-environment and health & safety). Successful candidates ideally should have access to their own vehicle during office hours and are expected to organise their own accommodation.
